HISTORICAL FACT N° 1

The dungeon of Gouzon owes its name to Guy III of Gouzon, a lord of the Bourbonnais, who married Blanche de Beaumont, holder of the fief, at the end of the 13th century. Acquired by the bishop of Poitiers Fort d'Aux, around 1350, it served as a watchtower until the 17th century. In the 19th century, only the outer walls remained, although cracked, while the interior was overgrown. Several restoration campaigns were conducted in the dungeon before it could house this museum in 1993. The "stone" exhibition room is located in the part built in the 12th century. At that time, the dungeon had a square plan and was 12 m high. Its only opening was the door which is the present entrance.
